New 5 year research position


The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto invites applications for a 5-year
research position in Theoretical Physics. The successful candidate will develop research
activities at the Porto Physics Center (CFP), and will participate in the Physics
graduate programs.


The research positions are aimed at developing research in Theoretical Physics at the
Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. The appointments will be made for up to

The researcher should have a strong background with interests in Theoretical Physics. It
is expected that he/she will contribute to strengthening existing research areas at CFP,
which include: Condensed Matter Physics with an emphasis on strongly correlated and
disordered electronic systems in low dimensions; Statistical, Computational and
Non-linear Physics with an emphasis on interdisciplinary applications; High Energy
Physics with an emphasis on Cosmology, Gravitational Physics and String Theory. However,
applications are also encouraged from excellent candidates from other related research
areas. In addition to the research work, the successful candidate is expected to:

 – Actively participate in the CFP seminars, organizing advanced lecture series on themes
in Theoretical Physics and participating in the organization of national and
international conferences.
 – Supervise PhD and Master thesis students, as well as lecturing on Physics Master
degree programs.
 – Collaborate with the Physics Department and research units in the ongoing activities
to promote the public awareness of science.

Candidates must have a PhD in Physics or related areas, and relevant postdoctoral
research experience (in general at least 3 years; this requirement may be waived for
exceptional candidates).

The employment conditions are in accordance with the Programme Ciencia 2008
( These include a salary equivalent to the index
195 of the Portuguese research career (approximately 42500€/year before taxes), as well
as full social security benefits.

The appointment of the successful candidate is subject to final approval by the Fundacao
para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia.

 – Curriculum Vitae.
 – A 5-year Research Proposal (maximum 2 A4 pages), emphasizing their own research
objectives and their contribution to research at CFP.
 – 2 letters of recommendation.
